Today is Canada Day, a day which we celebrate our great country. But in Newfoundland, it is also Memorial Day which is a day to reflect on our many ancestors who lost their lives on this day ensuring a future of freedom and liberty for us.
Today we remember with thanks and pride, the men of the Newfoundland Regiment who fought at the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. In less than 30 minutes it was all over…710 men were killed that day with only 68 survivors, the Regiment was practically wiped out. It is a very sad and sombre day in our very proud history. So we remember them with pride and reflect on the tremendous sacrifice.
Enjoy your weekend!
